چکیده

Studying quasars at the highest redshifts can constrain models of galaxy and black hole formation, and it also probes the intergalactic medium in the early universe. Optical surveys have to date discovered more than 60 quasars up to z 6.4, a limit set by the use of the z-band and CCD detectors. Only one z 6.4 quasar has been discovered, namely the z = 7.08 quasar ULAS J1120+0641, using near-infrared imaging. Here we report the discovery of three new z 6.4 quasars in 332 deg2 of the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey, thus extending the number from 1 to 4. The newly discovered quasars have redshifts of z = 6.60, 6.75, and 6.89. The absolute magnitudes are between −26.0 and −25.5, 0.6–1.1 mag fainter than ULAS J1120+0641. Near-infrared spectroscopy revealed the Mg ii emission line in all three objects. The quasars are powered by black holes with masses of ∼(1–2) × 109 M . In our probed redshift range of 6.44 < z < 7.44 we can set a lower limit on the space density of supermassive black holes of ρ(MBH > 109 M ) > 1.1 × 10−9 Mpc−3. The discovery of three quasars in our survey area is consistent with the z = 6 quasar luminosity function when extrapolated to z ∼ 7. We do not find evidence for a steeper decline in the space density of quasars with increasing redshift from z = 6 to z = 7.

Selection constraints on high redshift quasar searches in the VISTA kilo-degree infrared galaxy survey

The European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) is a 4-m class survey telescope for wide-field nearinfrared imaging. VISTA is currently running a suite of six public surveys, which will shortly deliver their first Europe wide public data releases to ESO. The VISTA Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy Survey (VIKING) forms a natural intermediate betwe...

Quasars in the Cosmos Field

We obtained medium-resolution spectra of 336 quasar candidates in the COSMOS HST/Treasury field using the MMT 6.5-meter telescope and the Hectospec multi-object spectrograph. Candidates were drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR1 catalog using quasar flags set by the SDSS multi-color quasar target selection algorithm. In this paper we present our discovery spectra from 1.39 square d...

A Search for Radio-loud Quasars within the Epoch of Reionization

The Universe became fully reionized, and observable optically, at a time corresponding to redshift z ∼ 6.5, so it is only by studying the HI and molecular absorption lines against higher-redshift, radio-loud sources that one can hope to make detailed studies of the earliest stages of galaxy formation. At present no targets for such studies are known. In these proceedings we describe a survey wh...

Using the 6dF galaxy redshift survey to detect gravitationally-lensed quasars

It is possible to detect gravitationally-lensed quasars spectroscopically if the spectra obtained during galaxy surveys are searched for the presence of quasar emission lines. The up-coming 6 degree Field (6dF) redshift survey on the United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope will involve obtaining ∼ 10 spectra of near-infrared selected galaxies to a magnitude limit of K = 13. Applying previously develop...

SDSS J131339.98+515128.3: A new gravitationally lensed quasar selected based on near-infrared excess

We report the discovery of a new gravitationally lensed quasar, SDSS J131339.98+515128.3, at a redshift of 1.875 with an image separation of 1. 24. The lensing galaxy is clearly detected in visible-light follow-up observations. We also identify three absorption-line doublets in the spectra of the lensed quasar images, from which we measure the lens redshift to be 0.194. Like several other known...
